Jumping Text Cursor in Web Shell Fix
Mood:  surprised

Since the Angelfire redesign, we've had a few customers report that editing in web shell had become a chore due to the cursor jumping when hitting the preview button, or just generally clicking in and outside of the text area box in the basic and advanced editors.

This issue had us stumped for a while because quite honestly, we didn't change how the Web Shell works.  Sure, we REALLY altered the design of the website to give it a more friendly and modern web design feel. We also updated the HTML code from XHTML Transitional with a table based layout to HTML5 mark-up with HTML5 tags and div based layout...but the underlying back-end code that makes web shell work did not change one bit.

So what was the problem?

From all of our testing and research, Internet Explorer 8 seems to have been the culprit.

There is a known bug in Internet Explorer 8 that has been around since 2009 and has not addressed by Microsoft.  This bug can occur on various websites using large text areas (such as forums, large comment boxes, e-mail, and of course, web shell).

While there has been no official fix from Microsoft for this issue, we have found a way around it and believe we have fixed the problem.

We have re-tested writing large blocks of code in Web Shell on:
Internet Explorer 6, 7, 8, 9beta
FireFox 3+
Safari 4+
Chrome 7
and Opera 10.6

On all these browsers, we were only able to get the text cursor to jump while using IE 8 on a Windows 7 machine.

With our fix in place, we have not experienced the cursor jump anymore.

However, if anyone still encounters this issue, please let us know by creating a support ticket.
